South Africa's Vernon Philander bowls during the first day of their first cricket test match against …
MOHALI, India (AP) — South Africa's bowlers seized the early initiative Thursday as they reduced India to 82-3 at lunch Thursday on the opening day of the first test.
Opener Murali Vijay was batting on 40 with Ajinkya Rahane unbeaten on three at the interval.
Fast bowler Dale Steyn got appreciable movement early in windy conditions, but it was Philander who claimed the early breakthrough in his first over as left-hander Shikhar Dhawan edged to captain Hashim Amla at slip without scoring.
Left-arm spinner Elgar also struck in his first over to break a half-century partnership between opener Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara. Elgar bowled one that went with his arm and trapped Pujara leg-before for 31.
Rabada then struck in his second spell as captain Virat Kohli got a leading edge and was taken with a fine catch by Elgar in the covers as India slipped from 63-1 to 65-3.
Top-ranked South Africa, which is looking for its first test series victory in India in 15 years, handed 20-year-old Rabada his debut as the team went in with three fast bowlers.
South Africa allrounder Jean-Paul Duminy and pace bowler Morne Morkel, who missed the last two one-day internationals due to injuries, were ruled out.
India went in with three spinners - offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin, legspinner Amit Mishra and leftarmer Ravindra Jadeja.
South Africa has shown a good all round performance on the tour so far and is in line to win in all three versions.
It won a three-game Twenty20 series 2-0 and a five-game one-day international series 3-2.
